GreenGirl Outing
Bowling in Eco Style!
Submitted by gg_joni on Wed, 07/21/2010 - 5:08pmIsn't it about time that GreenGirls got together just for some fun? Come join us for an afternoon of bowling at The Highball on Sunday, Aug 1 from 2-4pm. If you haven't been to The Highball already, it's very cool. They've actually reclaimed and restored equipment from an old-style, 1959-built New Orleans bowling alley.
This event is for all GreenGirls, both old members and new folks. We would love to see you there!
We initially reserved 2 lanes (for a max of 2 hours); we have since reduced it to just one lane for 6 RSVPers. Please show up a few minutes early, because we will start promptly at 2pm. Hourly rates are $20 per lane (for up to 6 people per lane) plus $3 per person for shoe rental.
Be sure to RSVP that you are attending. [Note: A credit card was required to make the reservation. So we will need to give them 48 hours to cancel both lanes, or just 24 hours to cancel one of the lanes, if not needed.]

If you are a member of our Facebook group, please indicate that you will be attending this event. To find us there, go to http://www.greengirls.net/gg_on_facebook
The Highball is located at 1142 South Lamar Blvd, adjacent to Alamo Drafthouse, which is at the corner of South Lamar Blvd and Treadwell Street (the first traffic light south of Barton Springs Blvd).

What about the guys, you say? Later in the year, we will schedule a bowling event to include our husbands, boyfriends, and significant others. Please stay tuned.

Tree Planting in Pease Park
Submitted by gg_joni on Wed, 10/14/2009 - 3:38pmGreenGirls and friends, you are invited to help plant trees in Pease Park. Below is a letter from Richard Craig, who is doing an outstanding job of organizing events that make it easy for us to participate.
"I want to alert all of the Friends of Pease Park about our upcoming tree planting day in the park (1100 Kingsbury Street) on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. We will be planting 147 trees that morning with the help of the Parks and Recreation Department, the Austin Parks Foundation and Tree Folks. You are all invited to come participate.
Following the planting, there will be a celebration in honor of the new trees with live music by "Texico" and refreshments provided by Blue Star Cafeteria (starting about noon). So, please come out and help us plant trees and then adjourn for a "Party in the Park" in their honor. It should be good fun for the whole family. You will be doing something good for the environment and the community and have a blast at the same time.
We are also continuing to raise money for our planting efforts at Pease Park. If you would like to contribute, you can go to the website for the Austin Parks Foundation: www.austinparks.com and contribute by credit card. Or you can mail your check payable to "Friends of Pease Park" or "Trees for Pease" to:

Thanks for all of your support of Pease Park. I look forward to seeing all of you on November 14th. With everyone's help, we are going to restore it to being one of the environmental jewels of Austin."

Screening of FLOW, a Documentary Film about Water
Submitted by gg_joni on Mon, 03/09/2009 - 10:41amGreenGirls and their guests are invited to a screening of the 84-minute documentary film, FLOW. This is Irena Salina's award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century, The World Water Crisis. Christine Engler will lead a short discussion following the movie. More on Christine below movie details.
Filmmaker Irene Salina builds a case against the growing privatization of the world's dwindling fresh water supply with an unflinching focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel. Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis, at both the global and human scale, and the film introduces many of the governmental and corporate culprits behind the water grab, while begging the question "CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?"
Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround. You can view the trailer at http://www.flowthefilm.com/trailer
Christine Engler has a BS in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University with a specialty in Water Resource Engineering. She worked in the field of water resource engineering for 10 years. During this time, she was involved in the regional water planning effort for the state of Texas. The topic of water sustainability on the planet had always been of interest but was recently fueled by an article she read discussing the dire drought situation in the western United States. Shocked by the movie Flow, she wants to make a difference regarding the water crisis on our planet and raise awareness of individuals to protect and conserve this life giving resource.

GreenGirls & Green-Gos Celebrate Valentine's Day
Submitted by gg_joni on Tue, 12/23/2008 - 6:34pmAn open invitation is extended to GreenGirls and “Green-Gos” (green-minded guys) of all ages to celebrate Valentine's Day by helping with tree maintenance and tree planting projects in Pease Park, located about a mile west of The University of Texas campus. Toward this end, we will join the Austin Parks Foundation, Friends of Pease Park, and Eeyore's folks for a volunteer work day in Pease Park on Saturday, February 14, 2009. Isn't Valentine's Day a great day for tree huggers and others to unite in service to our beautiful community? Can we count you in?
First, a little background and history. Did you know . . . ?
“There is an ecological disaster unfolding in Central Austin. Few of us have really noticed it has happened so gradually. Austin’s beloved shady Pease Park is becoming de-forested. Within a generation, there will be few trees and no woods. Instead, there will be a dusty field, rocky grounds and exposed hillsides with no place to shelter from the burning summer sun. The green canopy that makes a park a park will have disappeared.” More . . .
Pease Park has a rich history and is blessed to have some adoring fans and guardians watching over its future, as described in Richard Craig's article “Pease Park Eternal?.” More . . .
In short, the park is in serious need of our love and attention. This volunteer work day is a great opportunity for green-minded guys in Austin to meet some of the GreenGirls who are helping with this event. The focus of this volunteer work day will be on several things:
1.) We will be removing some of the storm damage from the hillsides adjacent to the main park on Kingsbury in the area of the frisbee golf course and hike and bike trail.
2.) We will spread mulch and possibly dillo dirt on those same hillsides where the soil is compacted, stripped bare of vegetation, and has exposed numerous tree roots (risking loss of scores of established trees).
3.) We will work on erosion control on the hillsides, building rock terraces with available stones, mulching behind them to create new soil and channeling the water flow in less destructive ways etc.
4.) We will mulch and water the existing trees in the park (some of which are just a few years old and just getting established). This year's drought has stressed many of them very badly.
Event: Pease Park Volunteer Work Day for GreenGirls & Green-Gos
When: Saturday, February 14, 10:00am to 1:00pm
Where: Pease Park, 1100 Kingsbury Street (initial gathering place)
Link to Google map showing where we will meet to receive direction on various tasks to be done:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1100+Kingsbury+St,+Austin,+Texas...
Things to Bring:
. Your energy, enthusiasm, and fun-loving spirit
. Work gloves, preferably those that can be washed and reused
. Water to drink
If you wish to bring your own tools, that would be helpful. We will need shovels and wheel-barrows in particular. The Austin Park Foundation may be able to provide some of these tools, but to make sure we have enough, we encourage volunteers to come equipped.
Although GreenGirls are officially scheduled to work only part of the day, from 10am until 1pm, all volunteers are welcome to come earlier and stay later. Work crews are expected to be on-site from 9:30am until 4:30pm.
RSVP at http://www.greengirls.net/contact to let us know that you will be coming. If you forget to RSVP, come anyway. We need your help!
A mass tree planting of 100 trees will take place on the following Saturday, February 21. Irrigation lines have already been installed and the spots for the new trees have been staked, but there is still a lot of preparation to do. So let's get to work together!
Cash donations for "Trees for Pease" are still being solicited. Anyone interested can go to the Austin Parks Foundation website for instructions on how to do so. [Look for “donor page” link.] http://www.austinparks.org/apfweb/park.php?&parkId=307 Or you may send your check to the APF at 701 Brazos, Suite 170, Austin, TX 78701. The check should be marked “Trees for Pease” or “Pease Park” so it gets properly credited.
If you haven't been to Pease Park, let us help you get oriented. GreenGirls.net recently adopted the street segment adjacent to the park, so we have posted a few photos at http://www.greengirls.net/adopt-a-street_cleanup_photos
We would sure love to see you at the park, whether it be for a tree planting project or street cleanup event! Come on out and show you care!

Film: A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash
Submitted by gg_joni on Tue, 03/18/2008 - 7:15amGreenGirls are invited to a screening of the 90-minute documentary film, A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash.
You needn’t be a conspiracy theorist to see a connection between America ’s current obsessions with the Middle East and national security, and the world’s looming oil crisis. The frenzied search for alternative sources of energy now being pursued by the largest multinational energy corporations makes it clear they also believe a crisis is fast approaching. Each day’s headlines, whether the subject is Iraq or South America , sheds new light on the issue.
Oil Crash tells the story of how our civilization’s addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology. Compelling, intelligent, and highly entertaining, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled. The film provides not only questions, but possible solutions to the most perplexing and important economic, environmental and public policy issue of our time. (http://www.oilcrashmovie.com)
